// 01 — Who Is It For

Who Should Buy the THINKSCAN 662?

The THINKSCAN 662 hits the sweet spot between “basic code reader” and “professional bidirectional tablet.” If you’ve outgrown a simple OBD2 reader that just tells you a code number, but you’re not ready to spend $400+ on a full-system scanner, the 662 is where you land.

It’s built for the DIY mechanic who wants to actually test components — command the fuel injectors, cycle the radiator fan, test the ABS pump — without paying shop labour rates every time. It covers the four systems that matter most to most people: engine, transmission, ABS, and SRS (airbags). What it doesn’t do is access every system in the vehicle or perform ECU coding. For that, you step up to the 672 or 689.

Best fit: Home mechanic with one to three vehicles, comfortable doing their own oil changes and brake jobs, wants a scanner that can verify repairs and reset service lights without a subscription fee or annual renewal. If that’s you, the 662 is the right price tier with the right features.

What the THINKSCAN 662 Actually Does

Bidirectional Control — the Headline Feature

This is the feature most budget scanners don’t have and the reason to consider the 662 over cheaper alternatives. Bidirectional control means you can send commands to the vehicle’s ECU — test a fuel injector, command the radiator fan on and off, cycle the ABS pump, activate the throttle, and more — directly from the scanner without using the vehicle’s own controls. At this price point, it’s unusual and is the main reason the 662 exists in the ThinkCar lineup.

12 Service Resets — Lifetime Free

Most scanners either lock resets behind a subscription or only include a few. The 662 includes 12 of the most commonly needed service resets, all available for the life of the tool with no renewal fee:

Oil Reset
ABS Bleeding
Battery / BMS
Brake-pad Reset
DPF Regeneration
Throttle Adaptation
Injector Coding
Steering Angle (SAS)
Gearbox Relearn
TPMS Reset
Airbag Reset
IMMO Key Matching

Live Data — 4-Channel Comparison

The 662 can display four live data streams simultaneously in a comparison graph — coolant temperature, O2 sensor readings, fuel trims, RPM, and more all on screen at once. The scanner can record these data streams and export detailed diagnostic reports. For diagnosing intermittent faults or watching how multiple sensors interact, this capability matters.

CAN-FD and FCA SGW Support

CAN-FD support means the 662 works with 2020+ GM vehicles and other late-model cars using the newer protocol. FCA SGW (Secure Gateway) support means it can communicate with Fiat, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles made from 2018 onwards — a requirement many cheaper scanners fail at silently.

What the 662 doesn’t do: It accesses only 4 systems (engine, transmission, ABS, SRS) — not body control, HVAC, instrument cluster, or other modules available on the 672 and above. It also does not perform ECU coding (unlocking hidden features, custom parameters) — that requires the 672, 689, or 689BT.

Which ThinkCar Scanner Is Right for You?

ThinkCar makes scanners across four price tiers. Here’s where each one fits — and who should buy it.

Full-System Step-Up
THINKSCAN 672
$354.95 — Full-System + 28 Resets
The jump from the 662 to the 672 unlocks full-system diagnostics across all modules — engine, transmission, ABS, SRS, body control, HVAC, instrument cluster, and more. It also triples the service reset count to 28, adding AdBlue reset, NOx sensor reset, EGR adaptation, coolant bleed, and others that the 662 can’t do. The 7-inch screen and IMMO key matching make it the choice for small independent shops and serious DIYers who work on a wider range of vehicles. No subscription fees and lifetime free updates.

Pro — ECU Coding
THINKSCAN 689
$443.95 — Full-System + ECU Coding
The wired professional flagship. Full all-system diagnostics, 34+ service resets, bidirectional control, and OE-level ECU coding — the ability to adapt new parts, unlock hidden vehicle functions, and customize vehicle behaviour that most aftermarket scanners cannot do. CAN-FD, DoIP, and FCA SGW AutoAuth included. Covers 200,000+ vehicles. The tool that competes with scanners costing several times more. Standalone — no phone or app needed. Recommended for independent technicians and advanced DIYers working on European or late-model vehicles.

Bluetooth · Phone-Based
THINKDIAG 2
From ~$89.95 — Bluetooth Dongle
A completely different form factor — the THINKDIAG 2 is a small Bluetooth dongle that plugs into the OBD2 port and connects to your phone via the ThinkDiag app on iOS or Android. Full all-system diagnostics, bidirectional control, ECU coding, and 15 reset functions — all running through your smartphone. Includes CAN-FD protocol support. Ideal if you already carry your phone everywhere and want professional diagnostics in your pocket rather than a separate device. Note: after the first year, software requires a renewal subscription to retain full-system access — factor this into total cost.

How to choose: Need bidirectional tests and common resets on a budget — 662. Need full all-system access and more resets — 672. Need ECU coding and the deepest coverage — 689 (or 689BT for wireless). Want everything on your phone with Bluetooth — THINKDIAG 2, but factor in the annual renewal after year one.
// 07 — Bottom Line

Should You Buy the THINKSCAN 662?

If you’re a home mechanic who has been getting by with a basic OBD2 code reader and feels limited every time a repair requires more than reading a code, the THINKSCAN 662 is the right next step. The bidirectional capability alone — being able to command components, not just read them — fundamentally changes how you can diagnose and verify repairs. At under $200 with no ongoing subscription cost and lifetime free updates, it’s exceptional value for the capability it delivers.

Where it falls short is clear: it’s a 4-system tool in a world where full-system scanners are increasingly needed for modern vehicles. If you regularly work on vehicles and need access to HVAC, body control, instrument cluster, or want ECU coding capability, step up to the THINKSCAN 672 or 689. The $165 difference to the 672 buys significantly more capability and is worth it if you work on vehicles frequently.

OBD Guides verdict: 8.4/10 — Best budget bidirectional scanner in the ThinkCar lineup. Recommended for DIY home mechanics doing their own maintenance and repair who need to go beyond code reading. Not recommended if you work professionally or need full-system access regularly.

THINKSCAN 662 — Frequently Asked Questions

The 662 covers 4 systems (engine, transmission, ABS, SRS) with 12 service resets, no ECU coding, and a wired connection. The 689BT covers all vehicle systems with 34+ resets, OE-level ECU coding, Bluetooth wireless connection, and an 8-inch screen. The 662 is the entry-level bidirectional option; the 689BT is the professional flagship. Price difference is roughly $310 at list price. If you work on vehicles regularly or need ECU coding, the 689BT is worth the difference.
No. All 12 service resets and vehicle software updates are free for the lifetime of the tool. This is one of the key differentiators versus some competing scanners that require annual subscription renewal. The THINKDIAG 2 (also in the ThinkCar lineup) does require renewal after the first year — make sure you’re comparing the right models.
The 662 supports 140+ vehicle brands covering most cars built after 1996 with an OBD2 port. It includes CAN-FD protocol for 2020+ GM vehicles and FCA SGW support for 2018+ Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Alfa Romeo vehicles. Check the compatibility list at mythinkcar.com/coverage/checklist for your specific make, model, and year before purchasing.
This is a known issue mentioned in the manual — the battery arrives partially discharged from shipping. Charge the device for at least 30 minutes using a 5V/2.5A charger before attempting to power it on for the first time. The boot loop resolves once the battery has sufficient charge. If it persists after charging, contact ThinkCar support through the device’s built-in online service portal.
Yes — reading and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (CEL and all stored codes) is a standard OBD2 function included on the 662. You can read codes, view freeze frame data, clear codes, and verify the repair by monitoring live data after the clear. The 662 also includes I/M readiness status checking so you can confirm all monitors have completed before an emissions test.
