A check engine light comes on. A shop scans it and tells you the catalytic converter is bad — $1,500. Or the MAF sensor is failing — $250. Or the fuel pump is dead — $700. The quote sounds authoritative. The part is expensive. And in many cases, the diagnosis is wrong.

An oxygen sensor code doesn’t mean the sensor is bad. In many cases the sensor is reporting exactly what it sees — a real lean condition from a vacuum leak, dirty MAF, or fuel fault. Don’t Replace Your Ignition Coils Yet
A cylinder misfire code and someone recommending a full set of coils at $30–$120 each. The coil swap test takes 10 minutes and costs nothing — it tells you definitively which coil is bad (and whether it’s the coil at all). The test also reveals if the spark plug, injector, wiring, or oil leak is the real fault. Never buy coils without doing the swap test first.

A code identifies a system, not a part
A P0420 code means the catalyst efficiency monitoring system detected a problem. It does not mean the catalytic converter has failed. The same code can be caused by the converter, the downstream O2 sensor, an exhaust leak, or an engine running too cold. Every code opens a diagnosis path — the part at the end of that path requires confirmation, not assumption.

Before spending $1,500 on a converter, spend $20 on the sensor. Before spending $300 on a fuel pump, spend $5 on the relay. Before spending $150 on a MAF sensor, spend $8 on the cleaner. A stored code is a historical record of a threshold being crossed. Fix the root cause, not the symptom
A MAF sensor contaminated by PCV oil will be re-contaminated within weeks of cleaning if the PCV hose is not fixed. A new catalytic converter will fail again if the engine is still running rich. An O2 sensor replacement on a vehicle with an exhaust manifold leak returns the same code within days. The root cause and the symptomatic part are often different things — diagnosing down to the root cause is the only repair that stays fixed.
