What the Coil Swap Test Does — and Why It Matters

A cylinder-specific misfire code (P0301–P0308) tells you which cylinder is misfiring. It does not tell you why. The causes of a cylinder-specific misfire include the ignition coil, the spark plug, the fuel injector, the wiring harness connector, and — in rarer cases — a mechanical fault (low compression). Any of these will produce the same code.

The coil swap test isolates the coil specifically in 10 minutes at zero cost. You move the suspect coil to a different cylinder and clear the code. If the misfire moves with the coil — the coil is confirmed bad. If the misfire stays on the original cylinder — the coil is good and the fault is elsewhere. This one test eliminates or confirms the single most common cause before any parts are purchased.

How to Do the Coil Swap Test — Step by Step

This works on all coil-on-plug (COP) engines — which covers virtually every vehicle made after 2000. It does not apply to distributor-based ignition systems (pre-1995 vehicles) or coil-pack systems where one coil serves multiple cylinders.

Note the stored code and identify the misfiring cylinder
P0301 = Cylinder 1. P0304 = Cylinder 4. The last digit is the cylinder number. Find that cylinder on the engine — on inline engines, cylinder 1 is at the timing belt or chain end. On V-engines, Bank 1 (containing cylinder 1) varies by manufacturer. Consult your owner’s manual or the engine diagram in our P0301–P0308 code guide for cylinder numbering for your specific engine. Write down which cylinder is misfiring before touching anything.

Inspect the coil and plug well before swapping
Disconnect the electrical connector on the misfiring cylinder’s coil. Remove the coil retaining bolt (typically 8mm or 10mm). Pull the coil straight upward out of the plug well. Before swapping: inspect the coil boot (the rubber tip that contacts the spark plug) for cracks, carbon tracking (black marks running up the rubber), or white mineral deposits — any of these confirm boot failure. Inspect the plug well for oil — oil in the plug well means the valve cover gasket is leaking and will destroy new coils as fast as you install them. Fix the gasket leak before replacing any coils.

Move the suspect coil to an adjacent cylinder
Take the coil from the misfiring cylinder (e.g. Cylinder 1) and install it on an adjacent cylinder (e.g. Cylinder 2). Remove the coil from Cylinder 2 and install it on Cylinder 1. Reconnect all electrical connectors. The goal: the coil that was on the misfiring cylinder is now on a different cylinder. If the fault follows the coil, the misfire code will move to the new cylinder the suspect coil is now on.

Clear all codes and drive for 5–10 minutes
Clear all stored codes with a scanner. Drive normally — include the conditions that originally triggered the code (idle, light acceleration, highway). Drive for at least 5–10 minutes to allow the PCM enough engine cycles to detect any misfire on the new cylinder. On most vehicles the misfire detection window is 200–400 engine revolutions — typically 2–3 minutes of driving is sufficient. Don’t just idle — drive with varied throttle to properly load all cylinders.

Read the new code — interpret the result
Connect the scanner and read all stored codes. The result is definitive in both directions. See the result cards below for exact interpretation.

🔴 Code Moved to New Cylinder

The coil is confirmed bad. The misfire followed the coil to its new location — for example, if you swapped from Cylinder 1 to Cylinder 2 and now P0302 is stored — the coil is the fault. Replace only that coil. You do not need to replace any other coils unless they are also confirmed bad by their own swap test. Buy an OEM-specification coil — aftermarket coils have higher early failure rates on many European and Japanese applications.

🔵 Code Stayed on Original Cylinder

The coil is not the fault. A known-good coil is now on the original misfiring cylinder and the cylinder is still misfiring — the fault is in the cylinder itself, not the coil. The coil swap test confirmed the coil is fine. Now diagnose the original cylinder in this order — cheapest and most likely first.

Worn or Fouled Spark Plug
The spark plug on the misfiring cylinder is the next check after the coil swap test confirms the coil is good. Remove the plug and inspect: electrode gap (should match the vehicle spec — worn plugs have a rounded, enlarged gap), deposits (carbon black = oil consumption or rich running, white = lean, normal = light tan), and condition of the ceramic insulator (cracks cause misfire). Compare the plug to the ones from adjacent cylinders — a plug that looks significantly worse than its neighbours identifies the fault. Replace the full set if over 60,000 miles — replacing only one plug when the rest are worn means another plug will cause the next misfire soon after.

Failed or Clogged Fuel Injector
A failed injector on the misfiring cylinder starves it of fuel — the coil fires correctly but there’s nothing to ignite. After a confirmed good coil and a visually good plug, check the injector. Use a mechanic’s stethoscope at idle — each injector should produce a consistent clicking sound. A silent injector is not firing. Test resistance at the injector connector — most petrol injectors read 11–18 ohms. Wiring Connector Fault on the Misfiring Cylinder
The coil swap test moves the coil but leaves the wiring harness in place. If the connector on the original misfiring cylinder has corroded terminals, a pushed-out pin, or a chafed wire, a confirmed good coil installed on that position will still misfire. Inspect the coil connector on the affected cylinder specifically — look for green corrosion on the metal terminals, melted insulation, or connector housing damage. A pigtail connector repair costs $5–$30 and takes 30 minutes. Also check that the connector clicks fully into the coil body — a partially seated connector causes intermittent misfire that varies with vibration.

Low Compression — Mechanical Cylinder Fault
If the coil is confirmed good (swap tested), the plug is good, the injector is working, and the wiring connector is clean — do a compression test on the misfiring cylinder. A cylinder with significantly low compression (burned valve, damaged piston ring, or head gasket failure at that cylinder) will misfire regardless of ignition and fuel quality — there isn’t enough compression to support combustion. All cylinders should read above 130 PSI and within 15% of each other. A low-compression reading on the misfiring cylinder followed by a leakdown test identifies where compression is escaping. This is the most expensive diagnosis outcome — but the coil swap test, plug check, and injector test all have to be ruled out first before spending money on engine work.

If You Found Oil in the Plug Well — Fix This Before Replacing Any Coils

Oil in the spark plug well is one of the most common and most misdiagnosed coil failure scenarios. The valve cover gasket seals the top of the engine — when it fails, engine oil leaks into the spark plug wells (the tubes that hold the coils and plugs). The oil attacks the coil boot rubber, degrades the insulation, and eventually causes the coil to arc internally rather than firing the plug cleanly.

Replacing a coil without fixing the oil leak is a temporary repair at best. The new coil’s boot will be destroyed by the same oil within weeks or months. The correct sequence is: fix the valve cover gasket first ($20–$80 gasket, 1–2 hours), clean the plug well thoroughly with brake cleaner, then replace the coil (and plug if also oil-contaminated). Skipping the gasket repair means buying the same coil again within 6 months.

Signs of oil in the plug well: visible dark oil when you pull the coil out, oil smell when the coil comes free, carbon tracking on the coil boot combined with oily residue, or plugs with black oily deposits. Any of these signs means the valve cover gasket is the root cause regardless of which coil is showing a misfire code.

On vehicles where the valve cover gasket feeds oil into plug wells — particularly Honda K-series, BMW N-series, and Toyota 2GR-FE — the correct repair is: replace the valve cover gasket, clean all plug wells with brake cleaner and a rag, replace all coils on the affected bank simultaneously (since all boots will have been exposed to oil for the same duration), and replace the spark plugs at the same time. Do not replace coils one at a time on these engines — the others will fail within months anyway.

Replace One or All? The Correct Answer by Situation

4-cylinder under 100k miles
Replace only the confirmed-bad coil from the swap test. The other 3 coils have adequate remaining life. Monitor for additional misfires over the next 10,000 miles.
4-cylinder over 120k miles
Replace all 4 coils simultaneously. They all have the same mileage — the failing one failed first but the others are close behind. The incremental labour for 3 additional coils is minimal.
V6 — German brand (BMW, Mercedes, VW, Audi)
Replace all 6 coils simultaneously, regardless of mileage. German V6 coils fail in clusters — a P0301 on an N52 BMW means all 6 will fail within the next 6–18 months. The valve cover gasket should also be inspected and replaced if any sign of oil is present in the plug wells.
V6 — Japanese / US brand
Replace the confirmed-bad coil plus the others on the same bank if over 100k miles. The front bank and rear bank may have different heat and wear profiles — particularly on transversely-mounted V6 engines where the rear bank runs hotter. See our guide to cylinder misfire by make.
V8 any brand
Replace the confirmed-bad coil plus immediate neighbours on the same bank if over 100k. All 8 simultaneously if over 150k or if multiple coils have failed previously.
Oil in plug wells (any engine)
Fix valve cover gasket first. Then replace all coils on the affected bank — they have all been exposed to oil for the same duration. Do not replace selectively after an oil leak.
OEM vs aftermarket coils: OEM-specification coils (genuine manufacturer coils or equivalents from suppliers like Bosch, Delphi, or Denso) significantly outlast budget aftermarket units — particularly on European and Japanese vehicles. The coil market is full of low-quality units that fail within 6–18 months. The price difference is often $20–$40 per coil. On a 6-cylinder engine, spending an extra $120–$240 on OEM-spec coils instead of cheap aftermarket units is always the right financial decision over a 3-year horizon.

Any cylinder-specific misfire code (P0301–P0308) just appeared — do the coil swap test first. It costs nothing and takes 10 minutes. Do not buy any coils until the swap test result is known.
